What Is A Root Canal? – Purpose, Advantages, Something to Ponder- Treatment in Pune

What is a root canal?

Before we discuss in depth what root canal treatment is, it is imperative that we understand the anatomy of a tooth. Every tooth has three layers. The outer hardest one is the enamel which covers the second soft layer; which is dentin. In the center is the soft tissue called the pulp which contains the blood vessels and nerves which nourish the tooth. Root canal treatment is a procedure in which this infected pulp ( nerves ) is treated.

The central nerves can get infected when there is decay (cavity ) in the tooth which when not taken care of in the primary stage progresses further deeper and infects the central pulp with bacteria. Other reasons for a tooth requiring a root canal could also be trauma/fracture of the tooth or severe gum disease.

Early signs of a tooth requiring a root canal

  • Biting pain while chewing
  • Lingering Pain
  • Sensitivity to hot/cold,
  • Discoloration of the tooth,
  • Swelling or also foul-smelling discharge from the tooth.

Advantages of doing a root canal treatment

1) It stops the infection from spreading, hence avoiding the extraction of a tooth.
2) Avoids the infection from spreading to the adjacent teeth
3) Sensitivity in the tooth is gone
4) Better and painless chewing

Something to Ponder

If a tooth had pain prior which has now subsided in spite of no treatment, IT DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IN THE TOOTH IS GONE. It could possibly mean the central nerve is completely degenerated and dead, increasing the infection in the tooth. In such situations, the infection has a high chance ofinfecting other adjacent teeth, jaws, and bones and causing pus abscesses. Such an infection can be more difficult to treat and may require multiple visits and be more time-consuming.
The root canal treatment is done quite commonly and it helps you to smile, chew and bite and retain the tooth in your mouth.
